Name Practice and 'Stayin' on the Star'

Today we started our Star Behaviour program in kindergarten.  It is a system that serves as a reminder for students to follow all of the (strange and new) rules that come along with starting school.  It is simple and effective. It has built-in consequences and incentives and it's my favourite way to manage twenty energetic 4- and 5-year olds who are getting used to raising their hands, changing into indoor shoes, and asking to use the bathroom.  I use a punch card as a way to communicate with parents about how their child's days are going, and as a way to reward students who make an effort to follow classroom expectations.  After seven days on the star, your child will get to pick a ticket which will give them a prize like staying in at recess with a friend, eating their snack at the teacher's desk, or wearing a costume to school.  Track your child's school behaviour by asking them, "Did you stay on the star today?"

We did some tearing and gluing today to decorate our names.  They look awesome! Tearing paper is a really good way for little writers to strengthen the muscles in their hands.

We also worked in our number books.  We are learning to write our numbers so that we can start playing the games in our math centres.

Other Adults in the Classroom

Please meet Mme Anick.  She is an educational assistant in the school and a big part of her job is doing math support. She spends a lot of time playing math games with the kindergarten and grade 1 students (individually and in small groups).

This is Monsieur Dénis.  He is an educational assistant who sometimes helps Mme Katie in the classroom.

Second Day Pics

Well, we've survived another day in kindergarten!  It was another fun-filled afternoon.  We went out for our first 'recess' and the kids did such an amazing job following the rules that I am predicting that we will be going out with the big kids sooner than I had planned.

We also did 'Welcome Work'.  They are baskets of fun activities that were set up for us when we started our day today.

Our First Day of Kindergarten

Wow, what a day!  It went by so quickly.  We had so much fun and got to know our new friends. This class is an amazing group of kids.  I am so happy that I get to be their teacher!  Here are some pictures from our afternoon.

Here we go!
